The Characters

      • Inspired by the author’s (P.L. Travers) own father, Mr. Banks is a disciplined, no-nonsense man who works at the Dawes Tomes Mousley Grubbs Fidelity Fiduciary Bank in London. He is a conservative husband and father who runs his family like a business and doesn’t understand the benefit of “fun” until Mary shows him there is much more to life than work.

      • Michael is the youngest of the Banks’ children. Like his sister, Michael has a rebellious streak. Mary Poppins’ tape measure describes him as stubborn and suspicious, but that all changes when Mary teaches him that there is nothing wrong with being playful and that Michael’s father truly cares for him.

      • Mary is “practically perfect in every way,” as she floats down from the clouds and takes her place as the Banks family nanny. She has a magical influence on the children (as well as Mr. Banks), and she is always there to help with a song or a wise piece of advice whenever they are in need.

      • Jane is the mischievous daughter of George and Winifred Banks. She and her younger bother have worn out every nanny who has tried to teach them some discipline. But she is in for a surprise and a big treat when Mary Poppins drifts into her life.

      • Bert is a long time friend of Mary’s and a jack-of-all-trades. During the course of the film, Bert works as a chimney sweep, a pavement chalk artist, a kite seller and a one-man band. He may not be the world’s most successful businessman, but his irresistible co*ckney accent, jaunty attitude and loyal nature make him a wonderful friend, indeed.
