Bastien Vivès trok in 2008 en 2009 internationaal de aandacht met zijn veelbekroonde en in verschillende talen vertaalde stripalbum Le goût du chlore. Met het uit spaarzame dialogen, een beperkt kleurenpalet en soepele lijnen opgetrokken verhaal over een jongen die in een zwembad een meisje ontmoet, liet Vivès zich kennen als een gevoelig chroniqueur van de (prille) liefde. Die reputatie deed hij sindsdien alleen maar eer aan met strips als Dans mes yeux (2009), Polina (2011), Une sœur (2017) en recent nog met het op overspelige liefde gefocuste Dernier week-end de janvier (2022). Vooral met het als Een zus in het Nederlands verschenen Une sœur bewees Vivès op hartverscheurende wijze dat hij zich perfect kan inleven in het complexe gevoelsleven van tieners en jongvolwassenen. Het melancholische verhaal over een zomerliefde is misschien wel zijn beste strip tot nog toe. De gelauwerde graphic novels van de productieve stripmaker drukken vaak niet alleen ontluikende amoureuze gevoelens, maar evengoed opkomend seksueel verlangen uit. Vivès’ verhalen laten zich kenmerken door een teder in beeld gebrachte lichamelijkheid.
